Percentages

We get support questions all the time asking about the percentage complete on awards being wrong, so here I am going to put to rest all of your concerns. Generally when we have a complaint about percentages there is nothing wrong with the way the award is entered in our system - very rarely have we entered something in such a way that it doesn't calculate properly (but we are human, so I'm not going to say it's impossible). I'm just going to go over a few common complaints:

Q:"My scouts have completed this rank, but it's not showing 100%"

Three things are possible here in order of frequency from highest to lowest:

  • The user forgot to enter a requirement
    • Solution: Double-check and make sure that ALL requirements were entered, scroll through the list and make sure you didn't miss something. It happens to the best of us, no worries.
  • The percentage hasn't updated yet
    • Solution: Click on the "Edit" button for the award/rank and then save. The percentage should change to "Calculating" and it will update in a little bit, just refresh the page.
  • The award is in our system incorrectly
    • Solution: If you've checked that the other two problems are for sure not the issue, then put in a support request via our HelpDesk (Support>Get Help) and one of our customer support representatives will fix the award.

Q:"My percentage just keeps saying 'Calculating' and won't stop"

This is a rare one, but we recommend that the user clicks "Edit" on the award, saves it, and then wait for a minute before refreshing their page. It shouldn't take too long, not more than five minutes. If you come back much later and refresh and it's still stuck, put in a support ticket (Support>Get Help).

Q:"My percentage doesn't seem right, it should be bigger/smaller"

To understand what's happening here, you have to understand the way that percentages are calculated in TroopTrack. Awards are arranged in a tree-like structure... sort of like the files in your computer. Here is an example

  • Administrator
    • Desktop
      • Google Chrome
      • Microsoft Word
      • etc...
    • Documents
      • School
        • Essay about something.docx
        • Spanish Class
          • Translations.docx
    • Pictures
      • 2015
        • 3498159814.png
        • 1983458745.png
        • etc.
      • 2016

I think you get the picture. Awards in TroopTrack are very similar:

  • Badge/Rank (100%)
    • Requirement 1 (33%)
      • Sub-requirement
      • Sub-requirement
      • Sub-requirement
    • Requirement 2 (33%)
    • Requirement 3 (33%)

See how I've added those percentages? TroopTrack allocates the same percentage value to each top-level requirement. This means that even though Requirement 1 has THREE sub-requirements, it is still worth the same amount as requirement 2 and 3. So whenever you have an award like this:

  • Badge/Rank
    • Requirement 1 (50%)
      • Badge
      • Badge
      • Badge
      • Badge
    • Requirement 2 (50%)
      • Attend 1 meeting

It seems like the percentage is wrong if your scout has completed all of the required badges in Requirement 1, but hasn't completed Requirement 2. You just have to remember the way percentages are assigned to the main requirements and you'll understand why your percentage is the way it is.
